To the Editor:
Dawson County Landowners of 50 acres or more should be looking for a letter in their mailbox in the next few weeks introducing the North Georgia Land Trust. As Dawson County and the surrounding region continue to grow and thrive, our area faces an important challenge. How do we embrace progress while preserving the natural beauty and heritage that make the Dawson County community so special?
It’s a question that affects all of us – from lifelong residents to newcomers who have fallen in love with the rolling hills, forests, and waterways that define our home. That’s why we are proud to introduce the non-profit North Georgia Land Trust, a new initiative dedicated to balancing growth with conservation.
Our mission is simple: to preserve the landscapes, farms, vistas and waterways that give North Georgia its character. We want to ensure that future generations can enjoy the same beauty, resources, and cultural richness that we do today.
The land trust provides a voluntary, local, and community-inspired way to safeguard critical areas from overdevelopment while still allowing thoughtful and sustainable growth. We are working with local landowners, donors, businesses, and government leaders to protect land through either land donation or conservation agreements. Both preserve land FOREVER for the public benefit — creating more green spaces, protecting wildlife habitats, and ensuring clean water sources for North Georgia.
Our work is just beginning, and we invite the community to join us. Whether you’re a property owner looking to preserve your land as a legacy, a concerned citizen eager to support balanced conservation, or simply someone who believes in responsible growth, we welcome your involvement.
